Regardless of what transpired at the interview – whether you have a successful interview or not, the company still have to decide who to hire. So, if you don’t hear from them very soon, you have to be patient. Nevertheless, you should take advantage of this time lag (between the time the interview was conducted and when the result of the interview will be communicated to you) to follow-up your job interview. Here are 5 things you have to do while you wait for the outcome of your interview.

1. Send Thank You Message To Your Interviewer
First off, you want to send “a thank you message” to the interviewer for the interview you had in his/her company. Thereafter, you can call the interviewer to express your interest in the job but you must avoid calling the interviewer through personal phone number. If you have access to the office or work phone number of the interviewer, you can use that to reach him or her. If not, use the company phone number to get in touch with the interviewer or a senior officer through the receptionist.

2.Prepare For The Follow-Up Call
It is pertinent to say that it is one thing to get in touch with the interviewer or hiring manager depending on the person the receptionist links you to, but it is another thing to prepare what to say when you are making a phone call. So, to get the attention of the interviewer, you have to mention the date and time of the interview you had in his/her company, the position you were interviewed for and whatever you need to say to remind the interviewer about the interview even if he (the interviewer) has conducted a lot of interviews thereafter. Saying “Hello, I attended an interview for the position of Sales Representative last week Thursday 5th April, and I am calling to follow-up the Interview,” is an ideal example of a follow-up call! By following-up your application with a call, you are showing your enthusiasm for (and interest in) the job.

3. Thank The Interviewer For Taking A Couple Of Time To Interview You
You have to thank your interviewer for taking a couple of time to interview you. Keep in mind that you have to do this with respect regardless of who you are talking to. If you are told that you are not considered for the job; don’t get angry about that and never say things that will annoy the interviewer. But rather, say something like this, “Though this is not good news for me, I wish you good working relationship with your new hire.” You can also use the opportunity to tell the interviewer to get you informed of any job listings in the future.

4. Keep Up With The Interviewer

Unless you have heard from your interviewer that your application is rejected or someone has been hired for the position, you have to keep following-up. However, you should not make an attempt to call more than two times as you follow-up your application. If you are not sure whether or not you are considered for the job, use email to keep up with the interviewer.

5. Get To Know The Status Of Your Application
Show your enthusiasm for the job by asking about the outcome of your application. And try as much as possible to make your email short and direct. Your follow-up email should not be more than three (3) paragraphs. The first paragraph is the opening or introductory paragraph. The body of your email is the second and the conclusion is the third paragraph.
